Stanley does things right at HanneganMX The set of stadium jumps at Corona Raceway seems to collect victims at a regular rate. Here another pair encounter troubles. to Aseltine, Wilson and Patterson to keep the crowd alive. Aseltine came off his biggest win a few weeks ago in Michigan but couldn't put the stops on Strong but did hold off Wilson, Patterson, Rusty Flescher and Rance Barclay to the checkered flag. Chris Fitzhugh simply demolished the Open A main event, which for the first time was open to the Pros. Fitzhugh had very little trouble putting the field at his mercy on his XR Harley debut, a borrowed ride from fellow junior Bob Moran. Moran rode a 500 Honda and gOUlgoodglimp eof Fitzhugh from a distance and witnessed another of the hot juniors, Don Montgomery on an Husky MXer, come from behind to snag second behind Fitzhugh and ahead of Moran, Tom Lindquist and john Engelecke, who took fifth. The highlight of the evening was the Open Pro main. Strong sat the pole with Aseltine right beside on the Team Deeley/H-D Canada/Simpson/ Oilzall/Panther 500 Harley. Aseltine got off the line miserably, starting in sixth while Strong, Wilson (C-A), Patterson (KTM), Fitzhugh (Hon) and Kearney filled the slots ahead of the young sensation. Aseltine picked off three riders to settle into third by lap five and set up a battle with Fitzhugh, who is perhaps the northwest's topjunior. Up front, Strong set Hannegan afire, putting in consistent under-17-second laps until the end when he realized he had a good thing gomg and, breezed to the checkered flag for his double demolition honors and beat the advances of Aseltine. Fitzhugh rode well enough to nab third while Duane Gerrard (C-A) and Kearney rounded out the top five at the £lag. Results OPEN PRo: ,. Kirt< Strong (Han); 2. Steye Aseltine (H·D); 3. Morgan pirates Corona MX win By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, AUG. 10 Fighting his way to the front in both motos, Honda-mounted Nick Morgan took the overall win in the Mini Beginner 13 & 40 Over class at Corona Raceway. Morgan didn't have to fight too hard to win the first moto, but the second round was a race-long battle. R&D Suzuki-mounted Mike Allison jumped into the lead of mOlOone ahead of Ron Elser (Pro Circuit Hon) and Morgan. Allison gained a few bikelengths on the first lap, but couldn't pull away from Elser. On the third lap only a few bikelengths separated Allison from third-place Morgan as the three freight-trained around the track. Elser moved into the lead on the same lap and left Allison to contend with Morgan. It didn't take long for Morgan 10 find a way around as Allison began to drop off the pace. With a lap remaining Morgan was suddenly in first after Elser fell to third. Morgan cruised to beat Allison, while Elser looked 10 be a sure third. But just a turn before the finish he crashed, allowing Andre Chavez (Kaw) to take third. Allison pulled a clean holeshot at the start of the second round, but the race was red-£Iagged due to a pile-up in the first turn. In the restart he was off third behind Morgan and leader Sheryl Eedorow (Yam). To make things worse, Allison was quickly passed by Chavez. Morgan immedIately began 10 go for the lead but Eedorow wouldn't let him have it. Allison got third back on the second lap when Chavez fell, but was then passed by Elser. On the next lap Allison was back in third when Elser dropped way back, but by this time was too far back 10 even see the leaders. Morgan had been chasing Eedorow for the first half of the molO and the two set a pace that put them way out front. Eedorow almost lost the lead with twO laps 10 go as they came up on slower traffic, but a close pass kept the Yamaha pilot out front. Morgan could have gotten the overall by staying in second yet on the last lap he was still on the gas and going for the lead. With only a few turn left to go, Morgan got the break he needed - a tiring Eedorow got way out of shape through a series of jumps, allowing Morgan to get the inside line in the turn that followed. Morgan squeezed by, bumping Eedorow off the track and into second. Allison came in a distant third for second overall, and Eedorow's 4-2 was good for third. Results PEE WEE: 1, Jeff Lewis (Kawl: 2. By Paul Nielsen BELLINGHAM, WA, AUG. 8 Kawasaki rider Paul Stanley was a triple winner in the weekly Thursday-night motocross at Hannegan Speedway, winning the 60, 80 and 105cc A classes with relative ease. In other small-bike action, Corey Soderstrom scored a double with 80 and 105cc B wins. Riding a Yamaha, Soderstrom got away quickly in the 105cc race, with Brett DeVries (Hon) and jay Chenier (Yam) in hot pursuit. The trio soon formed a "train" and rode together like that for six laps, pulling away from the track all the while. On lap eight Soderstrom lost it momentarily, and both DeVries and Chenier capitalized on the error. On the next lap Soderstrom passed Chenier and then went on to chase and pass DeVries LO regain the lead. Soderstrom finished the single-moLO event with a four-second lead. The 80cc B race saw oderstrom get the holeshot again, and again it was DeVries and Chenier in relentless pursuit. Soderstrom rode flawlessly and the c10selv matched trio never changed po itlons during the race, although Chenier did pressure DeVries in the late laps. Results OPEN A: ,. Danny Bullock (Han); 2. Powells howl, Swan flies at CMC Baylands MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, AUG. 8 Baylands' action was particularly keen in the 80cc division and in Veteran classes as 23 of the little ones hit the track and 10 Vets vied for honors. Jamie Powell and brother Mike were the dynamic duo in the 80cc Novice class aboard their Los Gatos Kawasakis. Jamie powered to two moLO wins with apparent ease while Mike fought hard with Mike Rohde (Yam) and jason Warren (Kaw) in the first moLO and with Tad Dias (Kaw) and Rohde again in the second moto. Mike Powell's two third place finishes gave him second overall behind his brother. The 80cc junior class was the event illustrating how tenacity pays off. Rhett Fothergill (Kaw) could muster no better than fourth in moto one behind hard-charging. jeff Becker (D.C. Promotion Kaw), Ricky Peixoto (Yao) and Sam Higgins (Yam). It' was in moto two that Sam Higgins fell along with Becker and it took both riders out. Young Higgins was taken to the hospital for X-rays and released. Ricky Peixoto had some problems and dropped back; these events opened the door for Rhett LO motor home first, good for first overall! The Veterans class was back to full strength. Coast Honda-sponsored john Swan jumped to an early lead but was passed by Mike Lane (Hon) in the difficult whoop-de-doo section on the third lap. Later Lane fell and gave the vicLOry to Swan and the runner-up spot to Wes Broby (Hon). In the second moto it appeared Lane was sandbagging by following Swan and making only a late moLO pass for first. The results put Swan in for first overall and Lane second. Results BO NOV: ,. MX By Brian George STURGIS, SD, AUG. 4 The Borderline Racing Association kicked off the 1984 Sturgis Motorcycle Classic with a motocross race at Sturgis Raceway, site of the short track and hiJlclimb events later in the week, where over 150 riders turned out to compete. Mike Friend came into the pointspaying event only one point ahead of Billy Stork in the l25cc category, while Stork sported a 29-point spread in the 250cc standings. However, both riders extended their leading margin by winning their respective divisions overall. A new name popped up in the Open category, jay Mintyala. The Yamaha rider came down from Lewiston, Montana to compete over the weekend, and took both moLOS of the 500cc Pros Saturday. His Sunday performance was not so fortunate, as at Rapid City, Mintyala broke his leg after tangling with another motorcycle. In moto one of the 125cc Pros, Friend LOok off with LeeVern Berry, Tom Peters, jerry Wagner, Ladd Poitra and Greg Hyde close by. Friend proved LO be the fastest as the moto went on, and Berry rode hard to take
