Paiement's paydirf in HBMC 0.37 DES By R. A. Alexander LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, AUG. 11-12 The 250cc Expert class, along with the variable weather, was the highlight of the weekend at the Huntington Beach Motor- 28 cycle Club's Dual European Scrambles. Hot temperatures alternatedwith thunderstorms and £lash £loods, but Derrick Paiement never varied, winning both days. On Saturday the leader through much of the race was Yamaha rider Ed "Fierce" Pierce. However, Paiement and his Honda were hot on Pierce's trail, and with only a quarter mile left on the last loop, Paiement took over the lead and wen ~ in for the wm. Paiement returned on Sunday and repeated his win. Team Husky's Dan Smith, the dominant force in desert racing the last couple of years, did not have a good weekend. Smith endoed hard on Saturday. It was initially believed that he'd been seriously injured, but it turned out that he didn't break anything. After the weekend was over, however, he was still very sore. The 175cc class (C bikes or Division II Lightweight or whatever) had some good racing with Tom Elias and his Cagiva leading the first three laps on Saturday. A loose chain dropped Elias to third near the end of the race, and the LOp spot was taken over by Greg Johnston on a ProCycle KTM. Elias kept everything LOgeth,er to win on Sunday, though. The Shamrocks' Ted Hunicutt ,LOpped Open Expert action both days, with his win on Saturday accomplished despite two £lat tires and a thunderstorm of major proportions. Chuck Pettigrew followed Hunicutt home on Saturday, Chris Crandall on Sunday. Lori Farmer and her Honda swept two days of women's racing, with Yamaha-mounted Vicki Scott second both times. Bill Saltzman had three wins on the weekend, taking the Senior Open Expert class on Saturday and the Vet Open Experts both days. D-37 desert racing resumes with the Viewfinders hare scrambles September 9 at Red Mountain, California. Results SATURDAY SR OPEN EX: 1. W. Saltzman: 2. A. Knapp; 3. Horst, SR OPEN AM: 1. Varner: 2. The Kawasaki that Nichols couldn't get by belonged to Troy Cline, who was scheduled for the second wave. Nichols didn't know it at the time, but he didn't have to beat Cline to win. His attempt, however, left him far ahead of the others in his division. A tight race erupted for second, as David Dye, who started fourth, caught Cory Flynt for second only to fall, lose second, and gain it back on the final lap for a 1-2-3 Kawasaki finish. Yamaha rider Roben Sanchez holeshot the second moLO, but Nichols sped by almost immediately. Without any phantom riders in front this time, Nichols won easily. Cline's timing error cost him a certain trophy, beating the wrong class for nothing. Once correclly situated in moto two, only one rider, Yamahamounted Lee Loomis, finished in front. The pair raced side-by-side for half a lap until Cline [ell. He recovered and regained second place on the next lap, but couldn't catch Loomis. Cagiva rider Ron Turner wreaked his usual havoc on the 125cc Pro class, moving from a fourth-place start LO the lead on the third lap. Leader Ross Maeda crashed his Suzuki on the wall at the first turn, allowing Turner by. Turner crashed hard at the start of the first 250cc Pro event, and after a poor finish in the two-lap Ascot Challenge, was questionable for the second 125cc moLO. Turner put all questions to rest at the drop of the gate with a hoLeshot. He ripped out a six-second lead by the third lap and coasted home comfortably ahead of the Kawasakis of Mike Fedorow and Doug O'Donnell. Results 500 PRO: 1. Todd Peterson (Han); 2. Surratt surpasses CMC'Dunes competition By Kenneth Stein VALENCIA, CA, AUG. 26 At the Continental Motosport Club's first day race at Indian Dunes in nine years, 250 Honda rider "Wild Willie" Surratt beat out Dave Graff's Honda and a host of other Intermediates for first overall in his class. Jon Barrick's Honda was the first over the long straight that starts each moLO, with Graff and Surratt right behind. The pair shot by Barrick on the first lap. Surratt spent the next nine laps with his front tire nearly wedged up Graff's tailpipe. With two laps left, Surratt dove inside and came up with tile lead. Graff fell trying to retake the lead and stalled, dropping to third. Up again, he fell at the same spot with exactly one lap to go, nearly decapitating himself on the twine that bordered the course. Surratt flew home easily for the win, as Graff DNF. Graff, sore throat and all, was back on line for the second moLO, but started third behind leader Brady Helm's Suzuki and Surratt. Wild Willie took the lead on the second lap. It took Graff five laps to take second, but Surratt was out of sight by then. Graff finished the moto 12 seconds behind Surratt. A mob of 21 riders showed up for the 125cc Intermediate race. Bob Moore's Kawasaki led both motos flag to flag. He stretched his lead to nearly half a minute by the middle of the first moLO, gaining three full seconds a lap over the three-way battle for second. Alan Pierce's KX finaJly emerged ahead of Jim Spotts' RM for the second-place position. Pierce held second from Jeff Reynolds' Kawasaki throughout the second moLO, while Moore cruised around far ahead to the checkers. Results 500 PRO: 1.
