AMA GRAND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FLAT TRACK ROUND 5/JUNE 28, 2014 ALLEN COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS/LIMA, OHIO P56 STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LARRY LAWRENCE J ared Mees is proud of the fact that he's one of AMA Pro Grand National's most versatile racers. He's a threat to win on just about every track in the series, but even though he scored his first career AMA Grand National at the Lima Half- Mile and was a two-time winner at the classic cushion track, the fact was Mees hadn't won the race in seven years, since 2007. It was one he circled on his cal- endar and said he wanted to win again. Badly. Saturday night at the Al- len County Fairgrounds Mees checked Lima off his 2014 list. He won the 25-lap Ohio National by 2.663 seconds aboard his Kenny Tolbert-tuned Rogers Rac- ing/Las Vegas Harley-Davidson/ Blue Springs Harley-Davidson- sponsored XR750 over Kawasaki EX650 riders Brandon Robinson and Bryan Smith. Luck is often a big part of racing and Mees caught a lucky break when rival Sammy Halbert, who was going for his third Lima win in a row, suf- fered a blown engine while lead- ing mid-race. Afterwards Mees wasn't nec- essarily conceding that Halbert had him and the rest of the field covered, but admitted it would Jared Mees finally gets another Lima win SEVEN-YEAR ITCH
