he Mega Mile at Colonial
Downs is the most brutal
test of man and machine
in the AMA Pro Grand National
Championship. The massive
mile-and-a-quarter oval with its
deep cushion calls for full throt-
tle the entire way around with
engines gulping down heaping
helpings of wet sand and grit.
The roost blasting off a Grand Na-
tional bike's rear tire is powerful
enough to blow a following rider's
boot off a footpeg, not to mention
what the sticky sand can do to a
rider's vision. So when favored
Bryan Smith flinched before the
start of the 15-lap main and was
