taxes. Well if old Benjamin had
lived long enough to watch Bryan
Smith race around the Sacra-
mento Mile, he might have added
a third certainty of life.
Smith won even though it
initially didn't look like his night at
Cal Expo. The mile-master didn't
qualify fastest, didn't win his heat
race, didn't make the dash and
even started on the second row
for the 50th running of the Sac-
ramento Mile. Yet in spite of all
this, when the chips were down
and the green flag dropped on
the 25-lap national, Smith was
right there in the front. And even
though he got to the lead early in
the main event, he didn't domi-
nateāthe other riders looked
