Ascot Opens HALF-MILE Jody sets pace GARDENA, CAL, April 2, 1971 AMA attendance records continued breaking since the start of the new professional season. Ascot Park in Gardena kicked off the every-Friday·night-half-mi,le events to a new record turnout of over 170 riders, a "good" (2-3,000) crowd and the season was off to the best start ever. I HANGTO·WN MX I PLYMOUTH, CAL, April 4,1971 - Bob Grossi went up against most of the Western United States best motocross racers attending the Dirt Diggers North M.C. 3rd Annual Hangtown affair and simply wailed. His Open performance was the e,nvy of the 3000 'spectators on hand to witness the two-day affair, and his 250cc performance would have been a standout effort anywhere. Another Northerner, Brad Lackey, gave Grossi a real fight in the 250 class but engine trouble caused him to bail out in the final moto. See story on pages 20·21. ASCOT OPENER MARK TOPS TT ASCOT, CAL, April 3, 1971 Mark Brelsford is really getting it on. He nearly crashed both nights at Ascot. First in the Friday night half-mile final and finally in the heat race of the first TT event of the season on Saturday night. But he saved it both times. It takes a top rider to shake off a near-spill and come back a winner. Brelsford in that kind of rider.
