ATLANTA, GA., April 24-25,
1971 - Kel Carruthers powered
his way to the 250cc combined
Junior/Expert 50-mile road race
on Saturday and this proved to be
just an omen of th ings to come on
Sunday during the 125-Mile AMA
National Road Race at Road
Atlanta. Kel became the first
foreigner to win an AMA National
Road Race by holding off
Daytona winner, Dick Mann.
Mann's performance, however,
was good enough to move him
into the number one spot in the
AMA Grand National Points race.
Jim Odom slipped to second as he
finished at the tail end of the first
dozen receiving the checkered. A
fu II report on the th ree road races
as well as the opening event of the
Spring-AMA motocross series can
be found on page 16-17.
Dunes MX
VALENCIA, CAL., April 25, 1971
- For the second consecutive
week, most of the big names in
motocross turned up at Indian
Dunes. Last week it was the Grand
Prix and this week was AMXT
Benefit which offered a $1000
purse. Some real tight racing took
place in the Expert classes with
Bob Grossi, Mark Blackwell and
Bill Clements doing most of the
showing. The overall winner in
both the 250 and Open classes
was...take a guess. (Hint; he's won
the big ones for the past severa'i
weeks.) Times up - Clements.
Read how he did it on page 6.
Beautiful Road Atlanta was the site for this weekend's AMA
125-Mile National Championship Road Race. Filled with curves,
the speeds wer-e reduced to approximately 90 mph for the big
bikes. The finest road racers in the nation competed and her-e Cal
. Rayborn holds down the lead. He didn't keep it, hOlNever, as Kel
Carruthers (73) won the lightweight preliminary on Saturday and
National on Sunday. Photo by Don Woods.
